Eastern Turkestan is a traditional Muslim homeland whose demography the Chinese are trying to change drastically and this, coupled with state repression, has led to tensions in the region which erupt from time to time.

The AIMMM President Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan said in a statement here that the violence unleashed by the Chinese security forces and armed Chinese Han settlers in Urumqi since last Sunday has led to 156 dead and 1080 injured according to media reports. At least 1,434 Uighur Muslims have been arrested according to Chinese statements while Chinese security forces are searching for more people in Muslim areas. Muslim properties too have been heavily damaged in mob attacks.

Dr Khan said that China must realise that its way to prosperity and world status power does not go through state terrorism seen earlier in its similarly brutal form in the 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square. “Looking abroad for reasons for the unrest or blaming separatists will not serve China’s purpose” said Dr Khan adding that Beijing must realise that persecution of the Uighur Muslims and the continuous attempts to change the area’s demography by planting Han Chinese in the region are the real reasons behind the unrest.

“China must stop the migration into “Xinjiang” or Eastern Turkestan and allow its people to enjoy civil and human rights other Chinese enjoy,” Dr Khan demanded.
