“The incident took place in the St. Martin school in Deoria and Aman Kumar, a Class 4 student, was subjected to inhuman treatment,” police inspector Qazi Mohammad Ibrahim told IANS over phone from Deoria, about 300 km from here.

Aman, who stays in the school hostel, was unwell Monday and therefore decided to miss school and rest in his room instead. But after school hours, his teacher Joel went to Aman’s room and started beating him with a belt and even singed him with a burning candle for not attending classes, Ibrahim said.

A case against Joel was registered Monday night on a complaint by Aman’s father Sanjay Kasera.

“The teacher is absconding. Efforts are on to nab Joel,” said Ibrahim.

Aman is undergoing treatment in the district hospital and is said to be “out of danger”, according to the doctors, the official added.
