Abdel Aziz took the better of his eight challengers garnering 52.6 percent of the vote on Saturday, Reuters quoted Interior Minister Mohamed Ould Rzeizim as saying on Sunday.

Main opposition candidates, however, have rejected the results. The opposition insists that Saturday’s election was rigged and a ruse to put a democratic face on the military takeover.

To take part in the event as a civilian, Abdel Aziz quit as the head of the rebellious movement, which helped him last year to forcibly take over from former president Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.

Abdallahi was the first Mauritanian head of state to democratically hold power in the coup-hit nation.

Messaoud Ould Boulkheir, Abdel Aziz’ main opponent has led others in condemning the polls calling for an international examination of the results.
