New Delhi : The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Friday introduced bio-toilets and electronic toilets based on innovative technologies, which they said, will save water, energy and space and also be aesthetically more appealing.
The bio-toilets technology has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under the defence ministry.
Both the toilets are introduced on experimental basis and installed free of cost by the agencies concerned. The bio-toilet is installed at Nigam Bodh Ghat parking area on Mahatama Gandhi Marg (Ring Road) and electronic toilets near Kudesia Park at the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Kashmiri Gate.
Inaugurating these new technology toilets, Delhi Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney said: “In bio-toilets, the faecal matter and sludge is decomposed in a pit using DRDO-developed bacteria which convert the waste matter into methane and water. The toilet is maintenance-free and requires minimum water. More than 100 bio-toilets are already in use at various army locations.”
The electronic toilets have pre-flush system and after-flush system. If the user is not flushing the toilet after use, the system will flush 4 litres of water to clean the closet. If the user flushes the toilet, there will not be any flushing again.
The total space consumption for the electronic toilets is 35 square feet of space to setup the unit. Inside area is 15 square feet, height is 10 feet and it comes with a water tank capacity of 650 litres.
“The electronic toilet will be pay and use toilet. The toilets will be validated for the next 15 days and if found successful, more such toilets would be installed in high footfall areas and in the areas of tourist importance,” the mayor added.
