The total number of deaths due to snakebites in 2007 were 1,331, they went up to 1,508 in 2008 and came down to 1,162 in 2009, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Trivedi said in a written reply.

The highest number of snakebite deaths were reported from West Bengal. This also showed a decline. In 2007, there were 340 deaths, which came down to 313 in 2008 and further reduced to 283 in 2009.

Trivedi said health is a “state” subject and the state governments should ensure that anti-snake venom serum were available in healthcare facilities.

He said no shortage in the anti-snake venom serum is reported from anywhere.
