Prof. Jawahirullah was addressing a press conference amidst the members of zonal executive meeting at Tirupur. The executive meeting was held to form modalities for ensuing Tirupur District Conference of the party to be held on February 7 which will mark the first anniversary of the formation of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK)

Prof. Jawahirullah said his party is for total ban on sale of liquor through TASMAC (Government owned liquor shops) and demanded the imposition of total prohibition in Tamilnadu as it existed 3 decades ago. The MMK Chief Coordinator also said that although the Government profits huge revenue through the sale of liquor, it has been miserably failing in the duties of a welfare state to protect its citizens’ health.

Prof Jawahirullah stated that although the sale of liquor by the Government has filled up the state’s exchequer, it has ruined the lives and peace of millions of families.

The March 7 picketing programme in all districts of Tamilnadu will be only a precursor and the party will continuously struggle to force the Tamilnadu Government to impose total ban on sale of liquor in the state.

Prof. Jawahirullah said MKK was formed to uphold moral values in the arena of politics. It also aimed at providing opportunities for those who want to serve people through politics instead of using politics for selfish purposes.

Prof. Jawahirullah said local bodies provide the best opportunity to serve the people and hence his party would concentrate on the local body elections of 2011. As far as State Assembly elections are concerned his party’s target would not be the 2011 Assembly elections but the one scheduled to be held in 2016. Prof. Jawahirullah also said many sections of the people who want to cleanse politics off corruption are joining his party which has a good number of non-Muslim office bearers too.

The district conference on February 7 at Tirupur will focus on social justice. Prof. Jawahirullah said that his party demands the implementation of the Mishra Commission’s recommendations in toto. He recollected that Justice Ranganath Mishra was a former Chief Justice of India and also the first Chairman of National Human Rights Commission. Prof. Jawahirullah further added that Justice Mishra was also a Congressman nominated by the party to the Rajya Sabha. In this context, Prof. Jawahirullah wondered that there could be no valid reason for the Congress-led UPA to dilute the recommendations of the Mishra Commission.

Prof. Jawahirullah also demanded that a caste wise statistics of the communities should be considered and all the communities should be given reservation in proportion to their population.
