Islamabad : A probe has been initiated into the disappearance of 500 NATO oil tankers and vehicles carrying supplies in Pakistan, an official said.
Five hundred oil tankers and vehicles carrying supplies had left Port Qasim in Karachi for Kandahar in Afghanistan, but they didn’t reach the Pakistan-Afghanistan border near Chaman, Dawn Sunday quoted a customs official as saying.
The customs authorities had cleared the vehicles in Karachi.
The investigation was launched after the Supreme Court of Pakistan took suo motu notice of reports about the missing vehicles.
“We are optimistic that we will trace the missing vehicles and their documents,” the customs official said.
In the past two years, over 60,000 vehicles of the coalition forces have entered Afghanistan through the Chaman border.
The media report said local markets were awash with goods looted from NATO vehicles.
