New Delhi: While air still heavy with Babri Masjid land dispute – ‘resolved’ by high court but genuinely seen as unresolved by Muslims and overwhelming majority of the nation – a land dispute involving a mosque in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh has landed Imam of the mosque in police station.
The incident took place in Behat town of Saharanpur district where following a dispute over a piece of land on which the local mosque committee had started some construction work. Hafiz Ahsaan, the Imam of the mosque adjacent to the disputed piece, was arrested and brought to the Police Station where he was allegedly misbehaved with. The local Muslims came to know about it and reached the Police Station in large number. Seeing the anger of the locals, the Police immediately released the Imam. The Muslims alleged that the police acted in haste because the dispute related to minority community and did not think twice before arresting a person like Imam of a mosque.
Locals told TCN that the land dispute was between the Masjid committee people and another Muslim who lives across the road. Because Masjid committee was doing some construction work on that disputed land, the other person, who claims that the land is his, not mosque’s, complained to the local police. After which the Imam was arrested. But the matter was sorted out when local people intervened.
