Addressing a joint press briefing with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani at the chancellery, Merkel stressed her country’s interest in seeing the continuation of the peace talks.

The German leader urged both sides ‘to be ready for a compromise.’

Her remarks followed earlier comments by German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle who warned of an imminent collapse of peace negotiations after Sunday night’s expiration of the Zionist regime’s self-imposed freeze on West Bank settlement construction.

Meanwhile, the Qatari emir called on the Zionist regime ‘to show wisdom’ and allow the creation of a Palestinian state which could ultimately lead to security and stability in the region.
