Jammu : While Jammu and Kashmir’s ruling National Conference-Congress alliance bagged all the five legislative council seats it contested for, the main opposition People’s Democratic Party won just the sixth seat – but with more votes than its numbers in the legislative assembly.
The polls were held Wednesday morning and the results were declared in the afternoon.
The PDP has 21 members in the assembly, but its candidate Mohammad Ashraf Mir polled 25 votes, indicating that there were ruling combine legislators who had lent their support to the opposition group.
There are 87 members in the state assembly, and its members constitute the electoral college for the council.
The National Conference won three seats – its candidates Bashir Ahmad Shah and Dharamveer Singh Oberoi polling 26 votes each, and Noor Hassan polling 30. The Congress won the other two seats for the combine with its candidates Yashpal Khajuria and Jehangir Mir polling 30 and 52 votes respectively.
