“The election officials have been told to hold meetings with the district magistrate and the police superintendent to take necessary measures in bringing back the people who have fled their homes following political atrocities,” said chief electoral officer (CEO) Sunil Gupta.

“They have also been asked to make adequate security arrangements for those people so that these people can return to their house before the poll and can exercise their franchise freely.”

He said the political parties have also been asked to give a list of people who have fled their homes.

“So far we are informed that more than thousand people are staying out of their homes in East Midnapore district and a few others from West Midnapore district. However, some people, who were reported to have fled in Hooghly district have recently returned to their respective houses,” said Gupta.
