Kolkata: In the Phase-2 poll to be held on 23rd April in West Bengal, vote will be cast for 54 seats spreading in three Muslim-dominated districts — Murshidabad, Nadia and Birbhum. There are 293 candidates in the fray, out of them Muslims are 108. Out of three, Murshidabad is the highest Muslim populated district and so 78 of 108 Muslim candidates are contesting in this district.
Murshidabad has the highest number of Muslim candidates. Out of 143 candidates here 78 are Muslims including 6 women. Congress has fielded 12 Muslim candidates, Trinamool Congress 3, CPI-M 7, CPI 1, AIFB 1, BJP 1, RSP 5, Samajwadi Party 1, Janata Dal (U) 5, MUL (KSC) 7, SDPI 9, SUCI 7 and others besides 15 Independents.
Among the 12 Muslim candidates of Congress there are 3 sitting MLAs. They are Mainul Haque in Farakka, Abu Hena in Lalgola and Abu Taher Khan in Naoda. Of 7 CPI-M Muslim candidates 4 are sitting MLAs. They are Tauab Ali in Samsherganj, Insar Ali Biswas in Hariharpara, Anisur Rahman in Domkal and Unus Sarkar in Jalangi. Among contesting 5 RSP candidates 4 are sitting MLAs. They are Jane Alam Mian in Suti, Abul Hasnat in Jangipur, Md Refatullah in Beldanga and Id Mohammad in Bharatpur. Samajwadi Party’s MLA Chand Mohammad is also contesting in Bhagawangola constituency.
In 2006 election, 12 Muslim candidates won in Murshidabad. After delimitation there has been an increase in the number of constituencies in Murshidabad. In 2006 there were 19 constituencies in the district. Now there are 22 constituencies. Out of 22, three are reserved for SC.
Besides Murshidabad, 16 Muslim candidates are contesting in Nadia district. CPI-M has fielded 2, Trinamul Congress 2, CPIM (L) 2, Janata Dal (U) 2, MUL (KSC) 3, RCPI 1, PDCI 1 and Independents are 3. In 2006, only one Muslim candidate Shamsul Islam Mollah (CPI-M) won. He is also contesting on the same seat Chapra this year. In 2006, there were 15 seats in Nadia, after delimitation it increased to 17.
In total, 13 Muslim candidates are contesting in Birbhum district. CPI-M has fielded 2 Muslim candidates, Trinamul Congress 2, Janata Party, SUCI, RCPI and PDCI 1 each and Independents are 5. Only one sitting MLA Mr Kamre Elahi is contesting this year. He won in Murarai constituency in 2006.
