New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday said the overall security situation in the country was “satisfactory” but warned against complacency.
“Our overall security situation has been reasonably satisfactory in the past few months. (But) there is no room for any relaxation of vigil on our part,” he said in an address to civil servants here.
He said combating leftwing extremism, meeting terrorist challenges, countering insurgency in parts of the northeast, maintaining communal harmony and effectively dealing with atrocities on Dalits and tribals would “continue to be our priorities”.
He said the central and state governments were cooperating well to fight terrorism.
He reiterated his double-pronged strategy of unleashing development and using force to fight Maoists in parts of central and eastern India.
“As I have stated earlier, we have drawn up an Integrated Development Programme for sixty districts affected by leftwing extremism,” the prime minister said.
He said the governments would provide employment to tribal youths and revamp the social and economic infrastructure in remote areas.
“We are working for the development of far-flung areas in an ecologically sustainable manner. We believe all these efforts will go a long way in strengthening our internal security,” he said.
