New Delhi : Just after activist Anna Hazare addressed a conference here Monday evening to announced his anti-corruption strategy, his team member Arvind Kejriwal appealed to people to switch off lights in their homes for an hour as a mark of support for their cause.
People were asked to switch off lights for an hour starting 8 p.m. Monday.
Kejriwal said: “I asked people to switch off the lights for one hour, as the kind of independence we have today in our country is incomplete.”
“Nothing has been left untouched by corruption. Unfortunately, the government seems to be promoting it rather than preventing it. The government’s Lokpal bill is a complete eyewash and will shield corruption,” he said.
“There is injustice, corruption and intolerance. The government is out to crush people. They are crushing people’s movement,” he said.
“Government is violating the constitution of india and is also violating our democratic right,” he added.
“Therefore, in order to show symbolic gesture, the people of this country should place a ‘diya’ (after switching off lights) as a ray of hope,” said Kejriwal.
He stated that political parties held rallies in which lakhs of people participated, but restrictions were being imposed on Anna’s agitation.
“How can police say that we will disturb the law an order situation of the city. There were around a thousand of us sitting at Rajghat (Monday), did any one of us make any noise,” Kejriwal asked.
“Why is the government not supporting us. These are unreasonable restrictions,” he said.
“By putting us in jail they can not stop us. Let us see that for how many days they can put us in jail. The moment we are released, we will again fast,” said Kejriwal.
“We have support of people across the nation,” he said.
