Jammu : An organisation of nomads in Jammu and Kashmir has sought access for them and their livestock to pastures along the Line of Control (LoC) between Indian and Pakistani Kashmir that were declared out of bounds for them in the 1990s when the tensions on the border were high.
The nomads were suffering because of the denial of access to pastures along the borders, said Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation general secretary Javid Rahi.
“Now the situation has improved and the tensions are far less than those existed in 1990s because of the ceasefire along the LoC, it is in fitness of things that nomads of Jammu and Kashmir be allowed to move their livestock to these pastures,” he said, adding a letter has been sent to Defence Minister A.K. Antony with the demand.
Gujjars and Bakerwals are the nomad communities in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 10 percent of them move to pastures with their livestock during the summer.
