Addressing more than 10,000 Turkish compatriots in the western German city of Duesseldorf on Sunday, Erdogan said, ‘Like racism, Islamophobia is a crime against humanity.’

There are more than four million Muslims living in Germany of which 2.5 million are Turks.

German Muslim leaders have repeatedly voiced strong concern over deepening Islamophobia in their country.

Although the German government has acknowledged that Islamophobia has become a problem, it has yet to seriously tackle it.

Meanwhile, mosques in Germany have been the target of firebombings in recent months amid growing Islamophobia in the country.

Berlin mosques have been the scene of at least seven arson attacks since June 2010, among the Iranian Islamic Culture Center.

The Sehitlik Mosque, Berlin’s biggest mosque, has been firebombed four times over the past months.
