Mulayam Singh, Azharuddin detained on way to Moradabad

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Congress MP of Moradabad Mohammad Azharuddin have been detained a short while ago by Uttar Pradesh police while they were on their way to a violence-hit village in Moradabad. Large scale arson was reported from Moradabad over alleged desecration of Holy Quran by policemen on 6th July.

While Yadav was detained on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border by Ghaziabad police, Azharuddin, who represents Moradabad in Lok Sabha, was picked up by police in Moradabad when he was proceeding towards Asatalpur village.

In a flash protest over the incident of desecration hundreds of villagers had lodged strong protest in which the jeep of SHO Mainakhera was also torched. However, police claimed that the violence had erupted following the alleged molestation of some women by the cops, leading to violence.

As per reports reaching state capital on Wednesday, police had reached the village in search of an accused over some eve teasing issue. It is reported that police misbehaved with the family members and even desecrated the Holy Quran. This led to anger and resentment in the whole village. Hundreds of villagers gathered at the spot and asked the policemen to apologise. However, the policemen tried to use force which further infuriated the villagers. Later they chased them away however the policemen returned with huge force in short while. This time pitched battle was fought in which people from both sides were injured. The situation is tense while heavy force has been deployed in the area.
