Kolkata: India can make significant contribution at both industrial and scientific levels if it becomes associate member at CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research), the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, senior physicist at CERN Rudiger Voss said here Wednesday.
“India is enabled to make very significant contributions at leading edge of technologies. There is enormous potential in both the scientific community and industrial community of India,” Voss told reporters on the sidelines of the ‘Frontiers of Science 2011’ event.
When asked how India stood to gain from being a associate member at CERN, as the country will have to shell out a huge amount of money, Voss said: “Firstly, if it becomes a associate member then its potential would be realised at a much higher level and at an advanced level.
“Being an associate member would enable India to participate as CERN staff, which is an interesting prospect. It could also make profit as CERN could place direct industrial orders to Indian hi-tech industry.
“As CERN can place orders only to the member countries, If India becomes an associate member, it would be a very interesting prospect for the country. As far as I know, the Indian scientific community does want to get a membership at CERN,” said Voss.
