Jodhpur: The post-mortem report of one of the 15 women who died during childbirth at the government-run Umaid Hospital here last month has indicated infection as cause of death, an official said Thursday.
The report says that the infection caused a condition called disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) which resulted in excessive bleeding during childbirth and killed Anita, 25, an official of the Umaid Hospital told IANS on condition of anonymity.
However, the report does not say how the infection was caused. A team of doctors from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh will probe the matter further, the official said.
The 15 women died of excessive bleeding over a period of 10 days in February after they were allegedly administered contaminated IV fluids.
A senior manager of the Indore-based firm which manufactured the fluids was also arrested.
However, a report prepared by a team of doctors from SMS Hospital in Jaipur said the deaths could be because of some hospital-generated infection.
Anita had been admitted to Umaid Hospital Feb 14 and operated upon for caesarean delivery two days later. She gave birth to a child, but died due to excessive bleeding.
The bodies of the other women were handed over to their families without conducting a post-mortem probe, but Anita’s family members had staged a protest to demand an investigation into her death.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Health Minister A.A. Khan told the state assembly Thursday that a team of doctors from PGIMER Chandigarh will arrive in Jodhpur in a couple of days to begin their probe.
