Mumbai: The central government Wednesday released Rs.2,196 crore (Rs.21.96 billion) to the State Bank of India and the Income Tax department from the liquidated assets of the late “Big Bull” Harshad Mehta and his companies, 20 years after he committed one of the biggest financial and stock market scams in the country, an official said here.
The payments – the first and biggest ever single lot of its kind so far – was released by Satish Loomba, custodian (trial of offences relating to transactions in securities), ministry of finance, appointed by the central government to deal with the mega-securities scam unearthed in 1992.
