Bhopal : Timely help of local villagers saved several lives as five coaches of Mumbai-bound Udyog Nagri Express derailed in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidhisha district early Monday, police said. Thirty passengers were injured, seven of them critically, in the accident.
The train (No. 12173) was coming from Lucknow when it derailed near Sorai station, over 70 km from here, around 6.30 a.m. Monday.
“As soon as we heard the sound of the train getting derailed and passengers crying for help, we reached the spot. We provided them water and took them to hospital for treatment,” Chandrapal Singh, a local, told reporters.
“The railway officials reached the spot only after two hours,” he added.
Uday Kumar, another villager, said: “Among the injured, there were at least four pregnant women who needed immediate help. They were taken to hospital.”
C.B. Singh, district collector of Vidhisha, said: “People got injured in the accident, but no casualty has been reported.”
This is the third rail accident in less than a month in Madhya Pradesh.
An express train hit a water tanker in Gwalior district Sunday. However, no loss of life and property was reported.
On April 18, a Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express from Mumbai had caught fire near Ratlam in the state.
