Jammu : The central and the Jammu and Kashmir governments are working on a relief package for about 20,000 families who had migrated from Pakistan administered Kashmir during the partition in 1947.
“The central government is sending a senior officer this month to work out the package. A proposal of Rs.1,775 crore has been submitted by the state government,” state Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Raman Bhalla told reporters on the sidelines of a function here Sunday.
The proposal was sent a couple of months ago, he added.
“The amount of Rs.1,775 crore will be a onetime settlement with the displaced people from Pakistan occupied Kashmir,” Bhalla said.
Approximately 20,000 families (now around 200,000 people) had migrated from Pakistan administered Kashmir in the wake of tribal invasion of Jammu and Kashmir in 1947 as part of Pakistan’s desperate bid to take over the Himalayan state.
The invasion was repulsed by the Indian Army but a ceasefire left at least one-third of the state’s territory in the occupation of Pakistan.
These refugees have been demanding their permanent settlement since their migration to Jammu and nearby areas.
