Moscow: The Syrian military Saturday fought back an infiltration attempt by an armed group north of the port of Lattakia, the SANA news agency reported.
Syrian servicemen clashed with the armed attackers, forcing them to flee.
Several Syrian military officers were injured and several attackers were killed, the agency said, without providing exact figures.
According to the UN, more than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria since the outbreak of a popular uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in March last year.
Western nations accuse the Syrian authorities of violently suppressing the protests. Assad in turn has accused the West of supporting the protesters, who he says are Al Qaeda-linked militants and army defectors.
