Pakistan withdraws diplomatic staff from Syria

Islamabad : Pakistan has decided to temporarily withdraw its ambassador and other diplomatic staff from Syria due to the deteriorating security situation in the country, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

However, the embassy in Syria has not been closed, Xinhua quoted ministry spokesman Muazzam Khan as saying.

“Pakistan is concerned about the security situation in Syria as well as killing of civilians and calls upon all parties to resolve the issue through peaceful means,” Khan said.

The UN estimates that nearly 40,000 people have died in Syria since violence began in March 2011 against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
