LeT guerrilla involved in Sarpanch’s killing arrested

Srinagar : A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) guerrilla, allegedly responsible for the killing of a sarpanch (village headman) in north Kashmir, has been arrested, police said Friday.

“Baramulla police achieved a breakthrough by arresting an LeT militant involved in the killing of Sarpanch Ghulam Mohammad Yatoo of Raipora Palhalan,” said a police statement issued here.

“In an operation carried out by Baramulla police, 29 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and 45 battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at village Raipora Palhalan, Baramulla, LeT militant Mohammad Altaf Ganie alias Cheema, son of Abdul Hamid, resident of Raipora Palhalan was arrested.”

According to police, Ganie’s other accomplice in the killing is still at large.

Police said they had recovered an AK-47 rifle, four AK magazines, 192 rounds of AK ammunition, a pistol, four pistol rounds, a pouch, a wireless set and 32 IED circuit packs in the operation.

Widespread panic had spread among the panches and sarpanches in north Kashmir after the killing of two sarpanches there earlier this year.
