Cholera outbreak in Cuba after 130 years

Havana : In the first cholera outbreak reported in 130 years, Cuba’s health ministry confirmed 158 cases of the disease hitting the Caribbean island nation this month, according to Xinhua news agency.

The ministry first reported a cholera outbreak in Manzanillo, with 50 confirmed infections and three deaths.

It said in a statement Saturday that media has been working to keep the public informed about the situation. It said measures were being taken to avoid a spread of the disease.

According to Cuban medical records, the last cholera outbreak occurred 130 years ago in August 1882.
