Indian envoy meets Indonesian parliamentary speaker

Jakarta : India’s Ambassador to Indonesia Gurjit Singh Tuesday met the country’s parliamentary speaker Marzuki Alie and handed him an invitation to visit India.

Singh handed the invitation from Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to Alie during his meeting here, the Indian Embassy said in a statement. Alie, president of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), has accepted her invitation to lead an AIPA delegation to India.

The visit is part of a series of commemorative events, being organised by India and the ASEAN this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of India-ASEAN dialogue relations.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) groups Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand,Indonesia Singapore, the Phillipines, Myanmar, Malaysia, Laos and Brunei.

Singh conveyed India’s desire to forge stronger parliamentary relations between the two countries, and stressed that a key priority during his mission will be to promote people-to-people contacts.

The Indonesian speaker appreciated India’s contribution to the ASEAN community.
