Chandigarh : Wheat procurement in Punjab has crossed the 125 lakh tonnes mark during the current season, state food and supplies department officials said here Friday.
The total procurement of wheat till Thursday evening has been 12,585,758 tonnes, they said.
An official spokesman of the department said government agencies have procured over 124.89 lakh tonnes wheat so far, which is over 99 percent of the total arrival of wheat at the nearly 1,750 procurement centres across the state.
The procurement has beaten records of the past many decades with a bumper wheat crop this year. Punjab is the biggest contributor of food grain to the national kitty despite having just 1.54 per cent of the country’s geographical area.
Sangrur, Ludhiana and Patiala districts were leading in wheat procurement, the spokesman added.
The state authorities had set a target of 110 lakh tonnes this season.
