BJP also demands special package for Bengal

Kolkata : The BJP Monday supported West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s demand for a special central package for the debt-ridden state, but called for a “proper monitoring” mechanism to ensure that the funds are utilised properly.

BJP chief Rajnath Singh however ruled out any tie-up with Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress now.

“Bengal has been going through a severe debt crisis. I demand a special package for the state,” he said here.

“While allotting a special package to Bengal, the central government should not consider which party is in power here,” he observed, pointing out the necessity of proper monitoring from to see whether the funds were being utilised properly or not.

The BJP chief, however, said his demand was not linked to any political interest and it was only the “interest of Bengal” which prompted him to ask for the package.

Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress chief, has been demanding a special financial package for the state to fight the debt crisis.

Asked if there is any possibility of a tie-up with the Trinamool before the Lok Sabha poll, scheduled for 2014, the BJP chief said: “This is currently not under consideration.”

He took a dig at the Banerjee-led government in the state, saying it had “failed” to fulfil the people’s aspirations after coming to power in May 2011.

“No parivartan (change) is made in real terms in Bengal.. law and order situation is a matter of concern as it is deteriorating day by day,” Rajnath Singh said.

Alleging that the Congress as well as the Communist Party of India-Marxist had ruined the state, he said he was hopeful that the BJP would come up as the principal opposition party in Bengal after the next assembly polls.
