New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia, RESET Dialogues on Civilizations, India Habitat Centre and Seminar are jointly organizing the Venice Delhi Seminars – A Plural Future 3rd Edition on “Religious Pluralism: Freedom and Diversity, Blasphemy and Respect” from October 10-12, 2013.
The Inaugural Session of the Seminar is scheduled to be held on October 10, 2013 at 10.30 AM in the Conference Hall of FTK-Centre for Information Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia. Prof. S.M. Sajid, Officiating Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia will deliver the Inaugural Address on this occasion. Ms. Nina zu Furstenberg, President, Dialogues on Civilizations shall Chair the Inaugural Session.
Vrinda Grover, Peter Ronald de Souza, Jytte Klausen, Akhil Sibal will speak on “Democracy and the Tension Between Freedom of Speech and Respect for the Other’s Religion, Culture, Identity: India and Europe” in the First Session from 10.30 to 1 PM.
Mani Shankar Aiyar, Sandeep Dikshit, Fawzia Koofi, Roberto Toscano, Rajeev Bhargava, will speak on “Minorities: Democracy to the Test of Religious, Cultural, Linguistic and Ethnic Pluralism” from 2 to 4.30 PM.
On October 11, from 10.30 AM – 1 PM at India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi Teesta Setalvad, Silvio Ferrari, Ruchira Gupta, will speak on “Blasphemy Between Present and Past: The History of Punishment and Decriminalization of Blasphemy in Europe, India and other Countries”.
On October 11, from 2 PM – 4.30 PM at India Habitat Centre, Pavan K Varma, Mihir Sharma, Laila Tyabji, Silvia Ronchey, Giancario Bosetti, Francesca Cadeddu will speak on “In the Eyes of the Other: Religions seen by other Religions: Proximity, Conflicts, Hybrids and Syncretism through Traditions, Rituals, Food and Dress Codes”.
This session will be followed by a Roundtable Discussion from 4.45 PM – 6 PM on “Which Role do the Media Play?” The panelists will be Basharat Peer, Rachel Dwyer, Manni Chatterjee. Shoma Chaudhury shall Chair the Roundtable Discussion.
On October 12, from 10 AM – 1 PM at India Habitat Centre, Rachel Dwyer, Shiv Vishvanathan, Ananya Vajpeyi will speak on “Traditional Society, Habits, Hierarchies Challenged by Irreverence and Provocation”.
As part of the programme, two films will be screened at Casurina Hall, India Habitat Centre as per details given below: October 9, 2013, 6.30 PM – “Dharm” by Bhavna Talwar (2007) starring Pankaj Kapoor, Hrishitaa Bhatt and Supriya Pathak. October 11, 6.30 PM – “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” by Mira Nair (2012). The film is based on a novel by Mohsin Hamid.
