New Delhi: From launching the struggle after Babri Masjid demolition to heading the movements against 16 December Delhi Gang rape to fight for oppressed class Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) have been in limelight for one or another reason in arena of media.
Often blamed for focusing on outside issues than inside JNUSU decides to go Varanasi to campaign against ‘fascism,’ i.e. Modi. JNUSU will depart for Varanasi in two phases. First one is to leave on 28th April along with 25 to 30 students. But second phase that is more crucial has to depart on 5th May that includes more than 100 students along with some teachers according to the information given by JNUSU president.
The move taken by JNUSU has been opposed by some organizations such as ABVP on the ground of being against the Constitution of JNUSU. When asked about this JNUSU President Akbar Chaudhri said, “This is the essence of JNUSU Constitution to stand against fascism and Modi is biggest face of fascism in present scenario, we are not against any particular person but we are against ideology of fascism”.
Referring to the comments that outside issues are more important than inside to JNUSU, Chaudhri told to Two Circles.net, “This is not the question of outside and inside. JNU is not an island. We also vote then how it became outside issue,” adding, “At a time when democratic spaces are shrinking, it is most important to speak against Modi. This is not only about election, we will continue our struggle against such forces prior and after election too.”
A day before leaving, in its press release issued on 27th April, JNUSU said, “We must also raise the fundamental questions: What are the sources of funds that have powered the unprecedented media blitz for Modi? What then are the interests of these funders? Can there be any fair choice, unless and until people get to know of these behind-the- scene forces? Can there be any “fair choice” when all alternative information is blacked-out by an all-pervasive bias? What, after all, remains of claims of ‘democracy’ when all means of ‘informed choice’ is choked off by manufactured ‘mania’? It is our urgent duty to stop this fast descent of democracy to corporatocracy!”
