Berlin : European Industry Commissioner Gunter Verheugen regarded the idea of turning food into biofuel as senseless, in an interview published on Monday by German Bild daily.
The European official said the initial excitement for the production of biofuels has decreased, something he was satisfied with.
He also said the time has come to reinforce research in other alternative fields, like hydrogen technology.
It would be a wrong step to turn food into biofuel or cutting tropical woods off, and this would bring negative result for climate, he stated.
For his part, German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel was in favor of being open to the biofuel production, but only if they do not affect the environment.
