Pakistani PM confirms Czech Ambassador killed in Islamabad hotel blast

Islamabad : Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Sunday confirmed that Ambassador of Czech Republic to Pakistan has been killed in the truck suicide bomb attack at the Marriot Hotel.

“The ambassador has been confirmed dead in the attack,” Gilani told reporters after visiting the injured at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences Islamabad.

The Czech Republic’s ambassador to Pakistan Ivo Zdarek had been missing since the yesterday attack.

Ivo Zdarek, 47, who was serving in Vietnam, was appointed ambassador to Pakistan last month and had been staying at the hotel, the embassy sources said.

Earlier, doctors at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences Islamabad said that bodies of a Czech national and a foreigner lady were brought to the hospital on Sunday.

Nearly 10 more bodies were pulled out of the rubble of the destroyed hotel as death toll climbed to 50.

He was married with two sons, according to the Web site of the Czech Embassy in Hanoi, where he was most recently posted.

Prime Minister Gilani said that 53 people confirmed dead in the deadly truck bomb attack.

Owner of the Hotel Sadruddin Hashwani said Sunday that three foreigners were killed in the attack.

He did not identify them.

Hashwani, who was also standing outside the hotel when the blast happened, said that 39 staffers of the hotel also lost their lives in the explosion.

The Prime Minister said that the bomber succeeded to bring the explosive-laden truck in the guess that it was carrying construction materials.

“Terrorists are destabilizing democratic process. They want to demoralize the security agencies, democracy and destroy the country,” the Prime Minister said.

“But the law enforcement are patriotic and professionals. The people should be vigilant to foil the designs of the terrorists,” Gilani said.

He also announced compensation of three hundred thousands rupees for the families of each person died in the attack.

The injured each will be given one hundred thousand rupees.
