New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Thursday denied media reports that it had given a clean chit to the Delhi Police in the Sep 19 Jamia Nagar shootout in which two suspected terrorists were gunned down and said it has not yet received a report from the police on the incident.
The commission said it had issued notice to Delhi Police on the matter Sep 24 and the two-weeks given for submitting the report were over.
“In some sections of the media, news items were flashed giving the impression that the NHRC has given a clean chit to the Delhi Police in the Jamia Nagar shootout episode when we have not yet received any report from them,” an NHRC official told IANS.
“On the basis of a complaint by an NGO, Real Cause, the commission issued notice to the Delhi Police Sep 24 and gave it two weeks to submit its report. The report is still awaited,” the official added.
The NHRC had issued notice to Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal after Real Cause alleged the incident could have been “fabricated”.
Two alleged terrorists, suspected to be involved in the Sep 13 Delhi serial bombings, were killed during the shootout at Batla House in Jamia Nagar in south Delhi. While two other suspected terrorists escaped, one was arrested.
Delhi Police inspector M.C. Sharma lost his life in the shootout.
“Only after getting the report, the commission will take a view on the matter and decide further action,” the official said.
