Jharkhand steps up security in all jails

Ranchi : The Jharkhand government Thursday decided to heighten the security in jails by installing mobile phone signal jammers in 18 prisons of the state, an official said.

The decision was taken at an advisory committee meeting chaired by Governor Syed Sibte Razi of the state, which is currently under President’s Rule.

“The advisory committee of Governor Syed Sibte Razi cleared the proposal to install 46 mobile (phone signal) jammers and construct 36 security towers in 18 jails of the state,” P.K. Jajoria, secretary of secretariat coordination committee department, told reporters.

There are 27 prisons, including two central jails, in the state. More than 19,000 prisoners are in these jails that have a strength of 6,000 only.

Seven prisons of the state have been put on high alert in view of jail break threats from Leftist insurgents.
