Dhaka : Family members of Bangladesh Army officers killed in a mutiny by border guards formed a human chain here to demand a fair probe into the massacre.
The grief-stricken family members, among them women and school girls, set up the winding chain from Jahangir Gate of Dhaka Cantonment to the Prime Minister’s Office, The Daily Star newspaper said Saturday.
A mourning procession was also brought out by retired army officers in Dhaka, demanding the immediate arrest and trial of the perpetrators and masterminds of the Feb 25-26 mutiny that left at least 74 people dead, United News of Bangladesh (UNB) reported.
Only a few of those arrested in the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) mutiny have admitted their role in the carnage. The dead included 55 army officers, an investigator told the newspaper. Many were wounded too.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government announced Friday that a special tribunal would be set up to try the guilty.
According to Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shafique Ahmed, only an investigation would reveal if only troopers of the BDR were involved or “outsiders” too were to blame.
The government has sought help from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation to probe the mutiny sparked off by low wages and working conditions.
Furious BDR personnel gunned down officers of the regular army who command the paramilitary unit.
