Kolkata : Trouble flared up again in West Bengal’s Nandigram village, claiming the life of a resident in a clash between the anti-land acquisition group Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Friday.
“One Madhab Mondal was killed in a cross-firing between CPI-M and BUPC supporters at Ranichak in Nandigram. He was said to be a member of BUPC,” West Bengal inspector general (headquarters) Jogesh Chatterjee told IANS here.
With the death of Mondal, the toll in Nadigram rose to 25 including the killing of 14 people in police firing on March 14.
Chatterjee said the situation was still not stable in Nandigram as both the groups had ransacked about 30 houses at Ranichak and Takapura in the violence-hit area in East Midnapore, about 150 km from here.
BUPC, which comprises of Trinamool Congress and other political groups, also called a 12-hour shutdown in Nandigram Saturday to protest the death.
Since January this year, the region has been witnessing violence over the proposed land acquisition for a special economic zone (SEZ) and a chemical industry hub. Though the proposed SEZ in the area was scrapped by the West Bengal government, the area continues to be on the boil.
