Mother jumps from running train to save newborn

Kolkata: A mother who gave birth on a train jumped off it as the newborn slipped through the toilet pipe and fell on the tracks in West Bengal, a railway official said Wednesday. Both the mother and baby are fine.

The incident took place between Gamaria and Birrajpur railway station near Adra in Purulia district when Tata-Chapra Express was passing through that railway stretch Tuesday night.

According to railway sources, Rinku Roy along with her husband Bhola Roy was travelling by the train when she felt labour pain and went to the toilet where she gave birth to her baby.

Accidentally, the newborn slipped through the toilet pipe of the running train and fell on the railway tracks.

The mother suddenly came out of the toilet and started shouting in the compartment. She immediately jumped from the train to rescue her baby. The co-passengers also pulled the chain of the running train.

Later, both mother and the baby were taken to Purulia Deben Mahato Hospital where they underwent medical treatment.

Terming the accident as “surprising”, physicians at the hospital said that both of them were fine.
