Kerala fishermen to get communication centres

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala government is setting up state of the art communication centres for fishermen in various districts, Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said in the assembly Monday.

“This would be basically an information centre with computers, internet and a host of facilities for the benefit of the entire fishing community,” Sarma said in reply to a question.

He added that a public address system would publicise all necessary information on weather conditions and potential fishing zones.

These centres would also highlight the various welfare schemes for the benefit of fisher-folk.

Besides, satellite technology supplied by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will soon start identifying shoals of fish. ISRO has also promised to help with a ‘rescue beacon’.

Kerala has 222 marine fishing villages housing 600,000 fishermen. The total production of fish in the country stands at 6.3 million tonnes, with Kerala accounting for 637,000 tonnes.
