New Delhi : Ace Indian golfer Gaurav Ghei is keen to defend his Mercuries Taiwan Masters title this month and is also aiming to finish among the top 10 in the other competitions he will play later.
But the Delhi-based Ghei, who is currently ranked sixth on the Asian Tour Order of Merit list with earnings of $227,174, clarified that he was not looking to dethrone the leader but instead play consistently well.
“It’ll be very difficult to catch Liang Wen-chong, unless I have a really spectacular Singapore Open. So, no real targets for me in terms of the order of merit, but I would really like to have a few more top-10 finishes,” he said here Monday.
“It’s been very good so far, I’m sixth on the order of merit and more importantly I’ve already won a tournament this year, something that is very satisfying,” he said, referring to his triumph at the Pine Valley Beijing Open.
Ghei said that he was looking to raise the bar in the upcoming competitions.
“Now I hope to raise the level of my game in the next two to three months as some very important events are coming up. Hopefully, I can continue my good form,” he said.
“However, my aim at this stage is to try playing well enough to be in contention for each event. Once you put yourself in contention, it all comes down to how well you play on the last day.”
Ghei has finished in the top-six in three other tournaments so far this season.
Besides, in November he teams up with Jyoti Randhawa to represent India at the 28-nation World Cup of Golf in Shenzhen, China.
“The World Cup is special in the sense that it is one of the very few occasions when you play as a team in golf. Since golf is essentially an individual sport, every time you play as a team it is a little different,” he said.
“Jyoti is one of the best players India has produced in recent times and it will be an honour for me to team up with him, and hopefully we can spring a few surprises.”
