Al Gore honoured at Emmy Awards

Los Angeles, Sep 17 (Xinhua) Former US vice-president Al Gore has been given an Emmy Award for his effort to launch a cable TV network that features programmes created by viewers.

Gore received a standing ovation from the audience at the 59th annual Emmy Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles Sunday, as his Current TV channel was named for achievement in interactive television.

“We are trying to open up the television medium so that viewers can help to make television, and join the conversation of democracy, and reclaim American democracy by talking about the choices we have to make,” Gore told the audience when he and business partner Joel Hyatt accepted their Emmys.

It was not the first time that Gore, who lost a controversial presidential election to George Bush in 2000, won Hollywood’s recognition for his involvement in the entertainment industry. His documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” on global-warming won an Academy Award earlier this year.
