Dhaka : Law and Information Adviser of Bangladesh caretaker government Barrister Mainul Hosein Monday said the government has the responsibility to assist the Election Commission (EC) for holding elections and side by side ensuring the overall law and order in the country.
The state of emergency was imposed in the country for political reasons and for any relaxation in the emergency rule will certainly depend on how much the political parties will be respectful of maintaining the law and order, he said.
The adviser said this while briefing newsmen after a meeting of the Land Ministry here.
Replying to a recent comment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on the state of emergency, he said the government would think about it. The crises were created because of political reasons and the running of government had become impossible through the existing political system, he added.
“Now we have to see how much improvement takes place in the political arena,” he said adding the government wants to assist the EC for holding the elections.
On a question on recovering government land from illegal occupation, the Land Adviser said the relevant laws will be amended to cancel the registrations of the lands those were allocated in violation of the set principles or on the basis of false information.
The government is interested to distribute khas lands among the genuine landless people, he said added that it is also considering amending the vested property act.
Land Adviser Barrister Mainul Hosein was presiding over the 28th meeting of the National Agriculture Khas Land Management Committee in the conference room of the Land Ministry.
The meeting emphasized the need for preservation of the records of demarcation of lands eroded by rivers and the new char lands and their ownership.
The meeting instructed the concerned officials to make the offices of AC (Land) free from brokers and also for hanging `citizen of charter’ in front of the office.
It also instructed divisional commissioners for preparing reports reviewing the recommendations of the Federation of NGOs Bureau (FNB) on settlement of agricultural khas land. Besides, they were also ordered to send data on total area of agriculture and non-agriculture khas lands in the country.
