Chandigarh : The second phase of panchayat (village council) polls in Haryana will be held in 36 blocks of state’s 12 districts Saturday, an Election Commission official said here Friday evening.
The first phase of panchayat elections held June 6 was marked by widespread post-poll violence at various places.
“We have identified 675 villages as hyper-sensitive and 741 villages as sensitive, which would have 1,885 and 1,260 polling booths respectively. Sufficient number of police personnel and home guards will be deputed there to maintain law and order,” said State Election Commissioner Dharam Vir.
Elections will be held in Ambala, Bhiwani, Fatehabad, Jind, Jhajjar, Kaithal, Kurukshetra, Mahendergarh, Sirsa, Sonipat, Mewat and Palwal districts.
“At least 51,984 contestants have been left in the fray after 7,124 candidates were elected unopposed in the panchayat elections. Now 33,800 candidates are in fray for panch (village council member), 11,097 candidates for sarpanch (village headman), 4,660 candidates for members of panchayat samiti (council committee) and 2,427 candidates are contesting for membership of zila parishad (district-level councils),” the official said.
Polling would commence from 7.30 a.m. and continue up to 4 p.m.
In the first phase, 70 percent polling was registered and six people were killed in post-poll violence.
