Love for one’s language: Rudy takes oath twice

By IANS,

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy had to take his oath twice Monday as a re-elected member of the Rajya Sabha – all thanks to the love for his mother tongue.

Rudy, who has been elected from Bihar, took his oath in Bhojpuri first. But since the language is not identified in the eight schedule of the constitution, Rudy was called to take oath again.

While most MPs were confused about the reason behind the repetition, the former aviation minister took his oath in Hindi the second time round.

Rudy, however, was not the only one who showed love for one’s mother tongue. BJP’s V.P. Singh Badnore, elected from Rajasthan, demanded that Rajasthani also be included in the list of languages.

“I would like to take the oath in Rajasthani. Since it is not in the eighth schedule, I request the Chair to see that it is included,” Badnore said before taking his oath in Sanskrit like his party colleagues Anil Madhav Dave and Tarun Vijay.

Most of the MPs preferred to take their oath in their mother tongue or Hindi, while a good number chose Sanskrit.

Monday was the first day of the monsoon session of parliament.
