New Delhi : Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday called upon police to work “beyond convention” to deal with terrorist threats to India.
In his address at a conference of top police officials in New Delhi, he said that terrorist outfits had “determined, committed and highly motivated adversaries”, who he said were working with evil designs and intent.
“We need to go far beyond conventional responses in facing the severe terrorist threats,” Singh remarked.
He voiced concern over his country’s internal security, which described as one of the key challenges facing the South Asian nation.
Singh referred to the recent serial bombings in hi-tech city of Hyderabad, which he said aimed at demoralizing the national security apparatus.
He also made a mention of an attempt on the life of a former chief minister and about trouble in some of the country’s north-eastern states, like Assam, Manipur and Nagaland.
“The ethnic overtones of violent acts in Assam are particularly disturbing,” he said.
Singh, however, said the situation in the part of India-controlled Kashmir has shown some overall improvement, but added there was no complete end to unrest there. “… violent incidents keep recurring,” the prime minister added.
He called for improving the country’s intelligence gathering system in order to be able to deal with terror threats.
