Kollam: PDP chairman Abdunnasir Maudany, accused in the Bengaluru blast case, yesterday announced that he would surrender before court. The details of the surrender were supposed to be decided today after the PDP high-level meeting at Anvarssery, but the police have banned any meeting in the campus as prohibitory orders are in force in the place.
Maudany announced his decision to surrender before court in the press conference held before breaking fast yesterday evening. He made the announcement after repeating, holding the holy Qur’an, that he had no connection at all with the plot or anything else related to the Bengaluru blast. The decision regarding when and where to surrender was to be taken in the high-level meeting of the PDP leaders at Anvarssery today morning. But the police have banned any meeting inside the campus as prohibitory orders are in force in the area since Saturday.
Meanwhile, higher officers of the Karnataka police have reached Kerala. Bengaluru police Joint Commissioner Alok Kumar and Deputy Commissioner Om Karaiya have reportedly discussed matters regarding the arrest with Kollam SP Harshida Attalloori. A team of the Karnataka police led by CI Sidhhappa has been camping at Anvarssery for a week.
The DySP of Karunagappalli had pasted a notice on the wall of Anvarssery yesterday evening asking for making the circumstances favourable for arrest, exit of those who are not permanent residents of Anvarssery and to remove weapons from the campus. The police reportedly explained that the notice was stuck on the wall as Maudany did not receive it.
Maudany said in the press conference that he took the decision to surrender as his arrest should not create law and order problems. However, the police may arrest him if they still wanted to continue with plans to arrest even after his offer for surrender. ‘I was ready to court arrest as soon as the Karnataka police reached Kerala on Monday. I decided to approach the Supreme Court as the arrest was postponed due to technical reasons till after August 15. The state police created a terrorizing situation by the prohibitory order and other measures when the legal procedures were going on. The people of two villages are suffering because of this. Such acts were not at all necessary as I had already made it clear that I was ready to court arrest if police came with warrant.’ Maudany said that he was afraid he might not reach (Bengaluru) safely if he surrendered before the Karnataka police. He added that children of the orphanage had to fast drinking only black tea as the police had blocked the food items coming to the campus.
In another development, some leaders of religious and social organizations yesterday met the Chief Minister asking government intervention to postpone the arrest of Maudany till the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court decided on the pending cases related to Maudany. But the CM reportedly responded that Maudany should court arrest as per law and that Kerala could not do anything on the matter as the case was under Karnataka. The leaders added that the CM should intervene politically in the matter rather than seeing the case just legally. The representatives of Jamat Federation, Jamat e Islami, Dakshin Kerala Jamiyathul Ulema, INL, Samastha Kerala Jamiyathul Ulema, Dakshin Kerala Lajnathul Mu’allimeen, Kerala Muslim Yuvajana Federation, Solidarity, BSP, PDP, SIO, Mahall Imam Aikyavedi, Minority Rights Watch, SYS, MES and MSS were in the team. Veteran journalist Bha Surendra Babu also accompanied them.
Meanwhile, there are also reports that the Karnataka police may hand over Maudany to Gujarat police after arrest. The Karnataka police last day reportedly stated that two persons accused in the Ahmedabad blast case would be brought to Bengaluru at the time when Maudany would be taken there and that questioning would be there on the relation between Maudany and the two. The media had reported last day that the Bengaluru city Police Commissioner had written to Gujarat Home Secretary on the matter. The two persons were handed over to the Gujarat police by the Karnataka police.
There are still no confirmed reports on the arrest of Maudany even as the deadline to present him before Bengaluru Chief Additional Metropolitan Magistrate ends today. The police are still camping outside the Anvarssery campus. Many of the PDP members who had been inside the campus have left the place. Maudany had yesterday asked all the PDP workers to keep calm even if the police made any provocative moves or if he was arrested.
