Beirut : Seven Lebanese Army troops and four Palestinian gunmen were killed in fierce fighting in northern Lebanon on Sunday, a security source said.
The source told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) scores of people, including many gunmen, were wounded in the fighting pitting the Lebanese regulars against gunmen of Fatah Al-Islam, a faction that reportedly advocates radical Islamic thoughts.
The source told the Kuwaiti news agency that the fighting broke out after members of the faction robbed a bank in the coastal town of Al-Koura, located south of Tripoli, Lebanon’s second largest city.
The army deployed troop and equipment reinforcements, as well as tanks and armored vehicles, around the shanty town of Nahr Al-Bared, scene of most of the fighting.
The source indicated that the Lebanese forces were encircling the shanty town.
