New Delhi: A man evading arrest in murder and other heinous cases in Uttar Pradesh and staying in the capital for the last 20 years under a fake identity has been arrested in south Delhi, police said Tuesday.
“Akhtar, who hails from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, was declared a proclaimed offender by various courts. The accused was held near bus terminal in Mehrauli area,” said a senior police officer.
Police said that he was was using the identity of Shadiq Khan and produced his voter election card in support of his identity.
“However, on questioning he admitted to be Akhtar,” said the officer.
He told police that he was living in Pul Prahaladpur near Badarpur in south Delhi to evade arrest by Uttar Pradesh Police.
Police said in Uttar Pradesh he spread rumours of his own “death” so as to escape from law.
During investigation, the accused said that he had committed a theft in a warehouse of a transporter in Bareilly with his associates in 1993. He along with his associates also kidnapped an eight-year-old boy from Aligarh in 1993.
In 1994, he shot dead a man in Badayun.
