New Delhi : The Congress Friday appointed Nand Kumar Patel as president of its Chhattisgarh unit, replacing Dhanendra Sahu, in what is seen as an attempt to reinvigorate the party in the state.
A statement issued by the All India Congress Committee said party president Sonia Gandhi has approved the proposal for appointing Patel as chief of the Congress in Chhattisgarh with immediate effect.
“The appointment has been made keeping in mind regional and other factors,” Congress general secretary B.K. Hariprasad, who is in charge of the party’s affairs in Chhattisgarh, told IANS.
Congress sources said Patel’s appointment is an attempt by the party to reinvigorate its state unit and rework caste equations in its favour. The party has lost two successive assembly polls in Chhattisgarh.
