New Delhi : Delhi Mayor Rajini Abbi has come under attack from industry bodies for refusing to hand over to the Delhi government the city’s industrial estates for their development.
The Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the National Capital Region wants all the industrial areas to be maintained through the private-public partnership (PPP) mode.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which the mayor heads, has failed to take care of the roads and sewerage in the industrial estates, said the apex body representing several industry associations.
There are 22 industrial areas spread over Delhi, the biggest of them in Bawana, Narela, Okhla and Patparganj.
The apex body has demanded that the MCD should give charge of the maintenance of all the industrial areas to the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corp (DSIIDC), which is ready for a PPP mode.
The industrialists’ reaction follows Abbi’s statement that all 22 industrial estates are the assets of MCD and that the Delhi government cannot transfer them to private players for maintenance.
Alleging that the Delhi government had failed to provide the MCD required funds, Abbi said it was not possible “for us to maintain and provide the required standard of civic services in the industrial estates”.
The industry associations have pointed out to the mayor that it was on their request that the Delhi government decided to give responsibility of maintaining the industrial areas to the DSIIDC.
“We, the industrial units, have good experience of privatisation of distribution of power through Discoms and expect same kind of results on PPP model for maintenance activities,” the apex chamber said.
